Dean Stoneman has powered his way to the top of the timing sheets after the opening day of the GP3 post-season test around Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, only several days after impressing many during the season finale for Koiranen GP. The Briton was followed by rookies’ Pierre Gasly and Oliver Rowland at the sharp-end of the order.
As the Formula 1 fraternity takes a break before reconvening around Austin’s Circuit of the Americas for the first of the final two races of the season, both the GP2 and GP3 Series have remained at Abu Dhabi to carry out their post-season tests around the glorious Yas Marina Circuit. At the start of the morning session British rookie Jan Mardenborough became the first driver to take to the track for Carlin, before Adderly Fong produced the initial benchmark for Koiranen GP.
The first of two red flag delays occurred when GP3 regular David Fumanelli made light contact with the barrier at Turn 8, causing damage to his Jenzer Motorsport machine. As soon as the track action was resumed, the times naturally began to tumble as more drivers began taking to the track. After a highly impressive return to single-seater racing last weekend, British ace Dean Stoneman was quick to rise to the top for Koiranen GP with a time well within the 01:56s ahead of Dino Zamparelli in the MW Arden and Alex Fontana in the ART Grand Prix.
After ending the GP2 Series as runner-up to Switzerland’s Fabio Leimer, Sam Bird was behind the wheel of the GP3/13 machine for the opening day of the post-season test. The Briton was carrying out development work for rookies Russian Time, who were gaining their first day of track action in the GP3 Series after purchasing Bamboo Engineering. Sam Bird was instantly on the pace, producing consistent lap times towards the sharp-end of the order in stark contrast to his rookie team-mate of Kuba Dalewski.
The morning session drew to a conclusion with Dean Stoneman in control at the top of the timing sheets with a 01:56.278 after completing 18 laps for Koiranen GP. The 23-year-old ended the session ahead of GP3 regulars Patric Niederhauser for Jenzer Motorsport and Dino Zamparelli for MW Arden, with Sam Bird a close 4th for Russian Time. Former British Formula Three driver Jan Mardenborough was the fastest rookie for Carlin in 6th, only sixth tenths off of the pace set by Dean Stoneman.
After making way for the GP2 Series to take to the Yas Marina Circuit, the 27-car field returned to the circuit for the afternoon session. A red flag delay ensued almost immediately, after the Jenzer Motorsport of Kevin Joerg ground to a halt out on track. Once the Abu Dhabi marshals had cleared the stricken machine, the session was resumed allowing rookie Pierre Gasly to storm to the top of the timing sheets for ART Grand Prix, in doing so becoming the first driver of the day to produce a lap time within the 01:55s.
The reigning Formula Renault 2.0 European Champion remained at the top of the order for a whole hour, before fellow rookie Oliver Rowland displaced the Frenchman for Marussia Manor Racing. As the opening day of the post-season test drew to a conclusion, Dean Stoneman reasserted his authority over proceedings for Koiranen GP, producing a 01:55.829 which would remain unchallenged. Behind the Briton Pierre Gasly managed to pip former Formula Renault 2.0 European rival Oliver Rowland to 2nd position, with Sam Bird once again a competitive 4th for Russian Time.
The GP3 field will return to the Yas Marina Circuit for the second day of track action tomorrow morning at 9am local time, with the afternoon session scheduled to start at 3pm later in the day.

Daniil Kvyat ends the GP3 season in style with Championship success
![](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/04-kvyat_victory_abu-dhabi_sam_bloxham.jpg?w=519)
Daniil Kvyat has ended his GP3 campaign in style after storming to Championship glory with a lights to flag victory around Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, eventually finishing ahead of the Carlin duo of Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly. Next season the Russian sensation will make the big step up to Formula 1 with Toro Rosso.
At the start Daniil Kvyat glided into a commanding lead ahead of the Carlins’, as further behind fellow Championship rival Kevin Korjus stalled on the grid. Miraculously the entire field safely managed to avoid the stricken Estonian driver, as the usual freneticism ensued throughout the first few corners. As Daniil Kvyat stormed into the lead of the race, Nick Yelloly and Alexander Sims settled into 2nd and 3rd behind the Russian ace. Further behind mayhem ensued at the chicane, as Carmen Jorda brought her race to a premature conclusion after bumping over the high kerbs.
Although the Spanish driver managed to avoid collision with fellow female driver Alice Powell, Carmen Jorda was still forced into an unfortunate retirement after sustaining damage to her steering column. With her car stranded at the apex of Turn 6, the safety car was deployed to allow the marshals to safely clear the stricken machine. After only several laps behind the safety car, the race was resumed with Daniil Kvyat once again storming into the lead of the race ahead of the Carlin duo.
Further down the order, Daniil Kvyat’s fellow Championship competitors of Tio Ellinas and Facu Regalia battled hard for 9th position. At Turn 12 the Cypriot ran extensively wide in a bid to avoid a collision with his rival, and was subsequently forced to hand the position back after illegally gaining an advantage in the process. After enduring an uncompetitive season at Jenzer Motorsport throughout the year, Patric Niederhauser steadily began to drop through the order as the race ensued with Conor Daly quick to pounce upon the ailing Swiss driver.
The 22-year-old Münsingen-born driver continued to struggle as the laps slowly began to tick away, with Carlos Sainz now swarming all over the rear of his Jenzer Motorsport machine. As the duo jostled for position down the back straight, they collided at high speed. Amazingly Carlos Sainz managed to keep his MW Arden car out of the barriers, as he spun a full 360 degrees and luckily sustained minimal damage. The same, unfortunately, could not be said for Patric Niederhauser who was forced into retirement with damage sustained to his front-right suspension.
Whilst Carlos Sainz continued to circulate despite his incident with Patric Niederhauser, Alexander Sims soon managed to overtake his Carlin team-mate further up the track to assume 2nd position. Despite the impressive overtaking maneuver, the Carlin driver was unable to make any inroads to Daniil Kvyat’s dominant lead. Further down the order the battle between Facu Regalia and Tio Ellinas raged on, with the Cypriot running extensively wide once again in his bid to catch his rival, this time at Turn 17.
Despite both Alexander Sims and Nick Yelloly’s impressive performances in 2nd and 3rd position, no-one was able to put a stop to the fearsome pace of Daniil Kvyat. The 19-year-old Russian eventually crossed the line just under five seconds ahead of the Carlin duo, to take his third victory of the season and the Drivers’ Title. Although one more race remains to be run tomorrow morning, both Championships have been settled. However, Series rookie Patrick Kujala will start the second race from the reverse grid pole alongside former Championship contender Tio Ellinas.

Jack Harvey takes victory in frenetic GP3 race at Monza
![](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/06-harvey_victory_italy_andrew-ferraro-gp3.jpg?w=519)
Jack Harvey has taken his second victory in the GP3 Series, after yet another incredibly frenetic race around the legendary Autodromo di Monza in Italy. The British sensation assumed the lead at the start, after initial poleman Patric Niederhauser stalled. He was followed by race one winner Daniil Kvyat, with Lewis Williamson 3rd.
After causing the incident at the start of the opening race of the weekend, Marussia Manor Racing’s Dino Zamparelli was suspended from the second race. The GP3 field took to the grid in overcast weather conditions, with the threat of rain still looming in the distance. At the start poleman Patric Niederhauser stalled, throwing away his chances of victory as the field streamed around him. Unfortunately not all of the drivers managed to avoid the stricken Swiss ace, as team-mate and fellow countryman Alex Fontana slammed into the rear of his car. This saw Fontana’s front-left wheel fly violently into the air, luckily clattering into the adjacent catch-fencing.
Further down the road the usual freneticism ensued as the field negotiated the tight opening chicane, as Ryan Cullen slammed into the rear of David Fumanelli before also collecting Giovanni Venturini. Although Fumanelli was able to limp back to the pits for a new rear-wing, the other drivers involved in the opening corner’s shenanigans were all forced into retirement. To allow the marshals to safely retrieve the stricken machines, the safety car was deployed for one lap.
As the safety car peeled into the pits, Jack Harvey stormed into the lead of the race ahead of Championship leader Facu Regalia. During the lap, numerous battles for position raged on up and down the pack, with Nick Yelloly and Jimmy Eriksson colliding at Turn 11 and spinning into retirement in the deep retaining gravel trap. The Swedish rookie had lost his rear-wing during the restart, and was therefore lacking grid throughout the final corner. By Lap 5 Lewis Williamson had perfected an overtaking maneuver on Facu Regalia for 2nd, and began reeling in his fellow countryman for the lead of the race.
With Jack Harvey and Lewis Williamson now engrossed in a battle for the lead, race one winner Daniil Kvyat began to catch Facu Regalia for 3rd. The Russian sensation perfected a maneuver for the position around the outside of Turn 4, demoting the Championship leader down a further position in his ART Grand Prix machine. Despite his competitive pace, Lewis Williamson soon found himself in the clutches of Daniil Kvyat, who wasted no time in perfecting an overtaking maneuver for 2nd position.
As the front runners jostled for the lead of the race, Adderly Fong collided with Samin Gomez and suffered a violent incident into retirement. The Canadian-born Hong Kong driver was forced wide by the Jenzer Motorsport driver, which subsequently saw him smash through the polystyrene bollards and fly over the kerbs at Turn 1. The Status Grand Prix driver eventually came to rest just after the opening chicane, with his car irreparably damaged.
Despite Adderly Fong and Samin Gomez’s incident at Turn 1, the race continued on without a safety car interruption. This enabled Jack Harvey to hold on and secure an illustrious victory for ART Grand Prix ahead of Daniil Kvyat, with Lewis Williamson a close 3rd. Further back Conor Daly managed to snatch the final points-paying position away from Carlos Sainz, after sweeping around the outside of the Spaniard at Turn 11.
The GP3 paddock will reconvene in early November for what should be a sensational season finale, around the iconic Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Facu Regalia will be striving to retain his lead in the Championship, with the likes of Daniil Kvyat, Conor Daly and Kevin Korjus hot on his heels.

Daniil Kvyat storms to dominant victory in hectic GP3 race at Monza
![](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/03-kvyat_victory_monza_alastair-staley-gp3.jpg?w=519)
Russian sensation Daniil Kvyat has stormed to a dominant lights-to-flag victory after a hectic and incident-filled opening GP3 race at Monza, eventually finishing ahead of Nick Yelloly in 2nd and Championship leader Facu Regalia in 3rd.
At the start a number of drivers initially struggled to get off of the line for the formation lap, with Kevin Korjus, David Fumanelli and Ryan Cullen all momentarily stalling before eventually joining the rest of the pack. The unusual action didn’t stop there, as Championship leader Facu Regalia half-spun on the exit of Turn 11 and Josh Webster unfortunately stalled just prior to lining up on the grid. Despite the stalled Status Grand Prix car in the background, the race began on time as Daniil Kvyat, Tio Ellinas and Robert Visoiu all jostled at the front into Turn 1.
Unlike the GP2 feature race earlier in the day, the GP3 drivers’ were unable to negotiate the opening chicane without incident. Marussia Manor Racing driver Dino Zamparelli was forced to cut the first corner, in doing so dangerously rejoining the circuit and T-boning his team-mate of Tio Ellinas. The ensuing melee saw Carlos Sainz tipped into a race-ruining spin, as well as Robert Visoiu and Conor Daly get caught up. The latter two drivers were eventually forced into retirement, with the American’s front-left tyre practically shredded after his collision. Championship contender Tio Ellinas was also forced into a frustrating retirement, in an incident started by his own team-mate.
Amazingly the safety car was not called upon after the opening lap’s incidences, with the Monza marshals managing to clear the stricken machines effectively to allow the race to continue. As the freneticism raged on throughout the pack, Carmen Jorda was struck with a drive-thru penalty for jumping the start. The carnage failed to stop after the opening lap, as Luis Sa Silva clattered into the rear of Aaro Vainio at Turn 1 and was forced into retirement, with the Finn luckily managing to continue circulating despite the severe impact to the rear of his machine.
Alex Fontana also retired during the early stages of the race, as the Jenzer Motorsport driver lost the rear of his car whilst negotiating Turn 11. This saw the 21-year-old slam into the retaining tyre barrier after skipping through the gravel trap, damaging the rear of his car beyond immediate repair. Whilst numerous altercations raged on throughout the race, Facu Regalia breezed passed Alexander Sims for 2nd position on Lap 4. The Briton continued to loose ground as the lap progressed, as fellow countryman Lewis Williamson found a way around him.
After enduring a frustrating spin at the start of the race during the melee at the opening chicane, Carlos Sainz began to claw his way through the field as the race progressed. By Lap 8, the Spaniard was up to 12th position after some quite masterful maneuvers which so nearly ended in collision. Patric Niederhauser managed to rise up into 8th position and the provisional reverse grid pole several laps later, with the Swiss ace keen to seek the advantage of pole for the second race on Sunday morning.
Whilst the pack jostled for position, Daniil Kvyat was in a class of his own at the front. The 19-year-old eventually stormed across the line a whole +5.3 seconds ahead of Nick Yelloly in 2nd, with Facu Regalia 3rd for ART Grand Prix to take his second consecutive victory in the GP3 Series. Patric Niederhauser will start tomorrow morning’s second race on the reverse grid pole, and will start alongside Britain’s Jack Harvey in what will surely be a thrilling addition to the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

Aaro Vainio storms to GP3 victory after lights-to-flag drive at Budapest
![](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/03-vainio_victory_hungary_alastair-staley-gp3.jpg?w=519)
Aaro Vainio has stormed to his third GP3 victory around the Hungaroring, after a masterful lights-to-flag drive from the Finn who managed to fend off the charging Conor Daly during the closing laps. The leading duo were followed by Russian ace Daniil Kvyat in the MW Arden, with Jack Harvey 4th.
At the start Aaro Vainio stormed into a commanding lead over Conor Daly, as the 27-car field negotiated the tricky first few corners without incident. During the opening few laps Championship leader Tio Ellinas plummeted through the order, after first Patric Niederhauser and then Alex Fontana and Dino Zamparelli all overtook the struggling Cypriot. Whilst the field began to evenly spread themselves out around the tight and twisty confines of the Hungaroring, Aaro Vainio managed to open up a comfortable two second lead over the American ace of Conor Daly.
By Lap 9 Tio Ellinas managed to recover after his highly uncompetitive start to the race, with the Marussia Manor Racing driver managing to overtake Dino Zamparelli down the start/finish straight. As the race progressed numerous battles raged on up and down the order, with the likes of Patric Niederhauser, Giovanni Venturini and Tio Ellinas all battling hard for position. The latter began pushing beyond the limits in the closing stages of the race, as he dipped a wheel onto the grass and run extensively wide on the exit of Turn 4 but managed to rejoin.
The flow of the race was disrupted on Lap 12, after a big shunt between Luis Sa Silva and Emanuele Zonzini, with Samin Gomez also involved but miraculously able to continue. As Sa Silva, Zonzini and Gomez negotiated Turn 1, utter disaster struck when Gomez collided with Sa Silva and the unsuspecting Trident of Zonzini barrel-rolled over the Angolan driver. This incident naturally brought out the safety car, as the efficient marshals cleared the two stricken cars and debris.
After only several laps behind the safety car the race was resumed, with Conor Daly pressurizing race leader Aaro Vainio. The ART Grand Prix driver was frustratingly denied the luxury of overtaking the race leader, as the duo negotiated Turn 2 practically side-by-side. Further back the traditional GP3 mayhem ensued, as Lewis Williamson suffered a spectacular spin in a cloud of tyre smoke. Melville McKee endured a frustrating end to the race, as he dropped through the order whilst running wide with Jimmy Eriksson between Turns 4 and 5.
Despite the crazy end to the race, Aaro Vainio managed to keep his composure and secure a masterful victory after a mature drive from the Koiranen GP driver. The leading duo were separated by just +0.6 seconds across the line, with Daniil Kvyat just under five seconds behind for MW Arden. Robert Visoiu managed to finish 8th, therefore securing him the reverse grid pole for tomorrow’s second race. The Romanian driver will start alongside Kevin Korjus.

Jack Harvey Takes Maiden GP3 Victory In Incident-Filled Race
![copyright malcolm griffiths gp3](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/01-harvey_victory_silverstone_malcolm-griffiths-gp3.jpg?w=519)
Jack Harvey has cruised to his maiden GP3 victory after an incident-filled 15 lap race around the legendary Silverstone circuit, which included a horrific incident for Patrick Kujala who barrel-rolled over the rear of David Fumanelli.
At the start Conor Daley jumped the start and stormed into 2nd position, whereas the American’s team-mate Jack Harvey shot from 2nd position into the lead at Turn 1. Through the opening corners several drivers ran slightly wide, including the MW Arden of Carlos Sainz jr. As many battles ensued throughout the order, race leader Jack Harvey proceeded to produce the fastest lap of the race. Further down the order Ryan Cullen and Jimmy Eriksson made minor contact at Turn 1, resulting in both drivers coming under investigation by the race stewards.
After visibly jumping the start, Conor Daly was struck with a drive-thru penalty along with the Bamboo Engineering of Melville McKee and the Trident Racing of David Fumanelli. As the race progressed, the safety car was deployed after a huge incident between Series rookie Patrick Kujala and David Fumanelli, with the former barrel-rolling over of the rear of the Italian’s machine. The Koiranen GP driver violently flew through the air and clattered into the retaining tyre barrier, eventually coming to rest upside-down.
The ever-efficient British marshals were immediately on the scene, as the 16-year-old Finn was assisted from his wrecked GP3/13 machine. The safety car period lasted for several laps as the stricken machines were cleared, before the race was resumed with only five laps remaining. Conor Daly immediately elected to serve his drive-thru penalty, as Jack Harvey stormed back into a commanding lead. As the race drew to a conclusion, Lewis Williamson and Carlos Sainz jr. collided whilst battling for 8th position and the reverse grid pole for tomorrow’s second race. The Briton was forced into a frustrating retirement down the Wellington Straight, as Sainz jr. limped around in his damaged MW Arden.
Despite the incident-filled 15 laps, Jack Harvey managed to bring his ART Grand Prix machine home to secure his maiden GP3 victory on home soil, ahead of initial pole-man Kevin Korjus with team-mate Facu Regalia a distant 3rd. Italian driver Giovanni Venturini will start tomorrow’s race from the reverse grid pole, alongside the Jenzer Motorsport driver of Alex Fontana.

Tio Ellinas Fastest On Day One Of GP3 Silverstone Test
![](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/03-ellinas_testing-silverstone_malcolm-griffiths-gp3.jpg?w=519)
Marussia Manor Racing’s Tio Ellinas ended the opening day of the GP3 Silverstone test fastest overall, with a time set during the afternoon period around the Northamptonshire circuit. The drivers were met with freezing weather conditions throughout the day, which saw the MW Arden of Carlos Sainz jr. post the fastest time in the morning period.
The day began in sunny yet bitterly cold weather conditions, with the majority of the 27-car field electing to immediately return to the warm confines of the pits after their initial installation laps. Eventually the track action increased throughout the morning period, with Alex Fontana and Nick Cassidy becoming the first two drivers to set times within the 01:47s. Gradually the times began to tumble, as Tio Ellinas and then David Fumanelli set the pace. However, the MW Arden of Carlos Sainz jr. finally went fastest as the session drew to a close with a 01:46.795.
![copyright malcolm griffiths gp3](https://andyyounggp.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/03-saintzjr_testing_silverstone_malcolm-griffiths-gp3.jpg?w=150&h=99)
Carlos Sainz jr. was fastest in the morning period, yet had his time deleted in the afternoon for being underweight.
After a two-hour lunch break, track action was resumed around the legendary Silverstone circuit. Facu Regalia caused an early red flag delay in his ART Grand Prix machine after stopping on the circuit, whereas his team-mate of Jack Harvey went fastest. Melville McKee rose to the top for Bamboo Engineering as the afternoon session entered its midway point, before Luis Sa Silva ran extensively wide at Becketts and glanced the retaining tyre barrier to cause another red flag delay.
As the afternoon session entered its closing stages, the wind began to pick up making driving conditions rather difficult. After causing an earlier red flag delay, Facu Regalia rose to the top as Adderly Fong ran wide at Chapel and caused yet another brief delay as his car was retrieved. Despite Regalia’s authority at the top, Tio Ellinas stormed ahead of the ART Grand Prix driver with only a minute remaining with a scintillating 01:46.211, a time 3.9 seconds faster than the previous GP3 record at Silverstone set last season by Mitch Evans in the old GP3/10 machine.

Lewis Williamson Fastest On Third And Final Day Of GP3 Estoril Test

Lewis Williamson has ended the third and final day of the GP3 Estoril test fastest overall for new team Bamboo Engineering, in a day which once again featured heavy rain. Kevin Korjus ended the morning period fastest for rookie outfit Koiranen GP, with the 27 drivers battling hard against the treacherous elements.
Just like the previous day, the third day dawned with heavy rain lashing down upon the Estoril circuit, providing the drivers with incredibly tricky track conditions early on. Only two driver changes occurred over night, with Nick Cassidy replacing Tio Ellinas at Marussia Manor Racing and Lewis Williamson returning to Bamboo Engineering in place of Ryan Cullen. Despite the inclement weather conditions, many drivers were eager to begin testing once the track turned green.
However, there was a controversial and early red flag delay when a stray dog was found wandering around the circuit. Naturally proceedings were halted until the dog was removed, and when the session restarted Kevin Korjus set the early pace for Koiranen GP. Due to the tricky track conditions many drivers made minor errors throughout the morning period, with the likes of Jack Harvey and Patrick Kujala spinning and therefore causing further red flag delays.
Kevin Korjus remained at the top of the timing sheets as the morning progressed, as the unrelenting rain continued to dampen proceedings. Patric Niederhauser became the next driver to fall foul of the tricky conditions, as the Swiss driver spun into the gravel and brought out another red flag delay. Alex Fontana did likewise once the session was resumed, therefore enabling Kevin Korjus’s time at the top to remain unchallenged, as the Estonian driver was followed by Carlos Sainz jr. and Jack Harvey.
Despite the terrible weather conditions of the morning period, sunshine greeted the 27 drivers once the afternoon session began. Nick Cassidy and Nick Yelloly set the initial benchmark, with the weather conditions still not perfect with strong winds gusting through the circuit. As the track continued to dry out, the drivers elected for the dry tyres and therefore began to set much more competitive lap times.
Kevin Korjus and Carlos Sainz jr. rose to the top as the afternoon session continued, whereas rookie Jimmy Eriksson spun as the rain began to fall once again. Many teams decided to run race simulations in the afternoon period, however Jack Harvey soon rose to the top for ART Grand Prix with only one hour remaining. Alex Fontana caused yet another red flag delay as his Jenzer Motorsport machine was struck with technical issues, whereas Lewis Williamson set the pace with a 01:27.675 to end the first GP3 pre-season test fastest for Bamboo Engineering.
The GP3 fraternity will reconvene next month for the second pre-season test around Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, as preparations for the new season continue to gather momentum. During the opening test the new GP3/13 car completed a combined total of 3809 laps, with much positivity from the entire GP3 grid.
