Venezuelan IndyCar driver EJ Viso has threatened to withdraw from this weekend’s IndyCar finale around the Auto Club Speedway, after a lack downforce experienced on his machine during opening practice and qualifying on the daunting 2-mile oval. This comes after Mike Conway withdrew prior to beginning of the weekend, after the Briton explained he was unwilling to continue racing on ovals.

This season has seen new downforce settings introduced for oval racing, aimed at reducing pack racing which was one of the key factors behind Dan Wheldon’s fatal incident at Las Vegan last season. However, these downforce settings [which are similar to those used at the Indianapolis 500] have caused quite a stir within the IndyCar paddock as the season finale approaches at the Auto Club Speedway.

In a message sent using the popular social networking site Twitter, KV Racing Technology driver EJ Viso has expressed discomfort with the lack of downforce on his machine. “If more downforce is not fitted for this race I’m not racing!” read the quote, several hours after the Venezuelan driver had tweeted Mike Conway support for deciding against racing this weekend.

EJ Viso has yet to decide whether he’ll race in tomorrow’s 250-lap MAVTV IndyCar World Championships race, which is scheduled to take place in the transition between day and night. Once the sun goes down, the track evolves quite substantially and could provide the drivers with a tough task as the race progresses. EJ Viso ended the final practice session ahead of tomorrow’s race 24th, +1.2710 seconds off the pace set by Ed Carpenter.
